Cracker Barrel is to me is like catnip is to our cat Reggie (who seems to have left us for a neighbor). I cannot get enough of the Sunday homestyle chicken with a side of dumplings. Before entering the Starch Consumption Plaza, though, guests have to navigate the maze of rooster quilts, Oak Ridge Boys CDs and ceramic birdhouses. I can’t ever get past the “Good Old Days” food section. (Cracker Barrel calls this the “assortment of nostalgic and classic products that evoke memories of the way things used to be.”)
While I have been known to plunk down the debit card for chocolate mints and Jordan almonds, I usually pay more attention to the packaging of other consumables. I want to help the people who create these labels.
Cracker Barrel isn’t the only restaurant with advertising issues, though.
Am I the only one who pays attention to things like this? Clearly not. Here’s something from my friend Shane Marshall Brown.
SIGH.
I’ve become pro-ampersand. Using “&” instead of “and” can save just enough space to warrant its existence. It has saved me many times when working on an advertisement copy. I wish there was an ampersand for “the.”

No. And didn’t I teach you anything?!

I knew you’d be disappointed. đŸ˜¦
At least I convinced my boss remove “United States” from the dateline of our international press release. That’s a pretty a big deal when you consider that 90% of the people I work with think papyrus is a legitimate typeface.

Our local Culver’s shop advertises its “Flavor of the Day” on a bit sign just off the highway. Like you see here: http://www.culvers.com/restaurants/rochester-55th, it’s supposed to be an ice cream flavor. However, it is ALWAYS some sort of non-ice cream product. Every time we drive by, my husband says, “Yum! grilled tuna and pickle ice cream!”
I get how how people mistakenly use an unneeded apostrophe, but how the hell does Culver’s management think it’s okay to advertise their lunch specials on a sign that says, “Flavor of the Day” at an ice cream shop?
Just sayin’.
